D'you know what today is? Yes, yes, it's Sunday, but it's also (drum-roll, if you please) International Dawn Chorus day!
It sounds like something dreamt up by Messrs. Cleese, Palin. Idle, Jones and Gilliam but as you can see here idcd.info [idcd.info] it's no spoof. Who thinks these things up, anyway? What next? International Pig Tickling day?
I usually catch the early show and am treated to day long performances from regular visitors such as Mr. Robin, who may have provided an alto trill beneath the bluff bassundo from the Fat Pigeons this morning, over the higher trilling of the finches and tits (no sniggering - no, really..."titter ye not!"). It was far too early for the pan-dimensional pheasant to make an appearance but i can hear him shr!eking away now. The best time is day-break, however, and the most noticeable thing about the Chorus is how loud they are when they don't have to compete with traffic - peace:)
It's also a day of endings and (hopefully) new beginnings.
Teddy Sheringham will bring down the curtain on a 22 year-long career that took him to United..."where he won it all!" youtube.com/watch [youtube.com/watch] His scuffed shot brought United back into the '99 Champions League final and his flick-on gave Solskjaer immortal glory. Without his header against Greece, Beckhams free-kick would've been a meaningless consolation goal. He played with some of the greatest goalscorers and players like Shearer, Klinsmann, and Cole, would be the first to acknowledge his contribution to their goal tallies. Tottenham fans may claim him as one of their own but United supporters will forever hold him in high regard for his part in the Treble season.
Another bunch of fans are hanging on every kick this afternoon and a Stoke supporter has penned this plea to help 'the Potter's' into the Promised Land of the Premiership: thisisthesentinel.co.uk/displayNode.jsp [thisisthesentinel.co.uk/displayNode.jsp]
Dad would've enjoyed it, being a life-long Stoke fan and, having been brought up in the generation of fans who watched Conroy, Hudson, Hurst and Banks, i'll have a soft spot for their success, too. (Besides, it'llbe a guaranteed six points for United next season!)
